Case Study: Emergency Busbar Replacement

Replacing Failed Busbar System
Cooper Weston successfully completed the emergency replacement of a failed busbar system at South City Court, Peckham, a residential block comprising 113 apartments. A catastrophic failure in the existing rising 2000A busbar system left the building reliant on a diesel generator, creating urgent operational and financial pressures and requiring a permanent replacement solution to be delivered within a compressed programme. The project involved the isolation and removal of the failed busbar and tap-off units, the installation of temporary generator supplies, and the delivery of a new 2000A XCP-S 4 Pole busbar system. The works were undertaken with the aim of restoring a permanent power supply while minimising disruption to residents and meeting the urgent requirements of the site.

The replacement installation included a custom-built end-feed isolator panel housing a Schneider MTZ2 2000A draw-out ACB, surge protection and digital metering. Tap-off units were installed to feed the existing Ryefield Boards, providing the required connection between the new busbar system and the existing electrical distribution.
Fire-stopping and IP54+ ingress protection were also reinstated as part of the works to address previous moisture issues. The project covered the complete process from design and installation through to dead/live testing and final commissioning, ensuring that the new system was fully tested and commissioned before the permanent power supply was restored.
